Mud Volleyball
The Mississippi Mud Volleyball Tournament in Hannibal, Missouri, has been held annually on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River since 1979. Up to 64 teams compete in a double-elimination bracket to determine the champion. Each squad is required to be co-ed (with at least half of the team being women), and anyone starting high school or older is eligible to play. Adapting to the slimy, slippery muck forces teams to develop unique styles and strategies. You won’t see much jumping — the net is 10 feet tall and the mud keeps competitors grounded — but there’s plenty of diving and lunging to make the play. And afterwards, hoses. Lots of hoses.
